Publications and Research

ORAU was one of the first radiocarbon AMS laboratories to be founded in the early 1980s. Since then it has been a leader in radiocarbon research in a wide variety of different areas including pretreatment chemistry, Bayesian age modelling and archaeological chronology building. Staff in the Unit have published major research papers, datelists, and collaborative publications with users of the facility from around the world.

The Fall of 1200BC

An ERC funded project based at the UCD School of Archaeology explores changes in migration and conflict at the end of the Bronze Age (ca.1300-1000 BC) and their relevance for understanding the collapse of Europe's first urban civilisation in the Aegean and proto-urban groups of the Balkans.

DeadSea-Eco

DEADSEA-ECO aims to explore the effects of human settlement on mammalian community structure, focusing on the phenomenon of trophic cascades in antiquity using the material record from the middle and late Holocene settlement sequence of the Dead Sea Ein Gedi Oasis, and to the contemporary palaeontological assemblages from caves located in the surrounding Judean Desert.

FLAME

The FLAME (Flow of Ancient Metal across Eurasia) is a European Research Council funded project led by Professor Mark Pollard of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art (RLAHA) at the University of Oxford. It sets out to investigate the movement, exchange, and transformation of metal in Eurasian societies during the Bronze and Early Iron Age.

Up-North

UP-North is examining the role climate change played in the dispersal of people and animals into Northern Europe at the end of the last ice-age and in the increasing diversification seen in the lithic and bone industries of these Late and Final Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers.
